  • What questions are asked?
The survey content is broad and asks students questions related to perceptions, attitudes, experience, and usage (lifetime and 30 day) on numerous indicators. Areas include Drugs and Alcohol, Tobacco, Mental Health, Bullying, Gambling, Antisocial Behaviors and Risk and Protective factors.
  • What will schools be asked to do?
Schools are asked to set a date and time for students to complete the survey. Instructions to administer the survey are provided to each school for distribution. The instructions are contingent upon how the survey is administered (paper or online).
  • Why is the survey important?
The CCYS provides schools with data to assess needs at the school, peer, and community levels. Parish schools and community agencies often use the information to apply for local, state or federal program funding. Additionally, the data is used to help stakeholders gauge what is working and what needs work within their schools.
  • How long does it take to complete the survey?
The survey generally takes 40-50 minutes to complete. Personal identification is not collected; therefore, the student must complete the survey (or as many questions as possible) in one administration.
  • Is a copy of the instrument available for public viewing?
Yes! The survey is posted on our website for viewing. A copy is also provided to the parish/district contact to send to each participating school.
  • What is the Caring Communities Youth Survey?
The Louisiana Caring Communities Youth Survey (CCYS) is administered biannually to Louisiana students. Participants of the survey include 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grade students from private and public schools throughout the State. The CCYS has been conducted in public and private school for nearly two decades. More information on the history, outcomes and reports can be found on the CCYS Website at
  • What are the dates for survey administration?
2022 CCYS administration begins October 2022. Schools that prefer administering the survey in paper format must complete and return survey no later than the end of January 2023. Online survey administration must be completed by the end of February 2023.
  • What if a student does not wish to participate?
Survey participation is completely voluntary. All students are informed prior to answering any questions that participation is voluntary. Additionally, students are informed they can skip any question or stop participating at any point after beginning.
  • Is student information confidential?
Yes! Personable identifiable information (PII) is not collected. Students are not asked to provide names, birthdates or any PII that could be used to connect a student to a survey.
  • How will the results be made available?
Reports can be accessed on the Picard Centers website late Spring 2023. State, Region and Parish (LEA) reports are publicly accessible. All school level reports are password protected. The parish school superintendent MUST be contacted to secure a school’s unique password. The Picard Center cannot release a password(s).
